Safety Center

Renting safely, every step of the way.

Practical guidance to help you avoid scams, stay safe during inspections and protect your money and identity.

Spot rental scams

  • If a rent is dramatically below market for the area, verify twice before paying.
  • Never pay outside RentGuard. Any request to send money via bank transfer or crypto is a scam.
  • A real landlord never rushes you and never asks for full payment before inspection.

Fake listings

  • Reverse-image search suspicious photos — scammers steal listings from other sites.
  • Only RentGuard-verified badges guarantee a physical inspection was carried out.
  • Report anything suspicious from the Report Center — reviews within 24 hours.

Safe inspections

  • Always attend inspections with a RentGuard field guide — never alone with a stranger you found online.
  • Tell a friend or family member where you'll be and share your inspection token.
  • Inspect during daylight hours whenever possible.

Secure payments

  • All payments run through Paystack Split Payments — you see exactly where your money is going.
  • You'll receive a payment reference in-app and by email for every transaction.
  • Screenshots of transfers are never proof of payment — always check your RentGuard dashboard.

Personal safety

  • Bring a companion to inspections whenever possible.
  • Trust your instincts — if anything feels wrong, leave and report from a safe location.
  • Emergency in Enugu: call 112 or the Nigeria Police on 199.

Identity protection

  • RentGuard staff will never ask for your OTP, password or full BVN.
  • Never share KYC screenshots with anyone outside the app.
  • Use a strong unique password and enable your email provider's 2-step verification.
